"Balancing Parenthood and Well-being"

What is NurtureNest?
When we think about postnatal recovery and the transformative journey of pregnancy, the focus often rests on the mother and baby. But what about the dads—the other half of this life-changing experience?
NurtureNest is an app designed to address this oversight by supporting both parents in maintaining their health, wellness, and community connection.
NurtureNest tackles the common challenges faced by parents, such as accessing newborn care resources and managing personal fitness. This case study explores the UI/UX design process aimed at creating a user-friendly, engaging, and supportive app experience.

1. Understanding the problem

What precisely is the problem?
To understand the problem clearly in initial phase I conducted two methods of research:

Interviews and Surveys:
I conducted interviews and surveys with new and experienced parents to understand their struggles in balancing fitness, baby care, and personal well-being.

Common Challenges:
I Identified key challenges such as time constraints, lack of motivation, balancing multiple responsibilities, and the need for accessible resources.

1. Survey Insights
Time Constraints
Finding time for exercise amidst work, childcare, and other responsibilities is a major struggle for participants.

Energy and Motivation
Balancing physical exhaustion and maintaining motivation for fitness is difficult for 70% of participants.
Balancing Multiple Responsibilities
60% of participants reported struggling to juggle work, family duties, and personal fitness, often leading to prioritizing one over the others.

Access to Resources and Knowledge
There is a need for easily accessible, effective fitness routines and baby care information online.
2. User Interviews
7 people of diverse background were interviewed for the problems and challenges they encountered within baby care and their own health

1. Balancing work and family
2. work and family commitments
3. Lack of time and energy
4. Finding motivation and consistency
5. Lack of knowledge about exercises and techniques

Most consider it important to maintain a healthy lifestyle while caring for children
Most of the parents wanting to connect with other parents and share experiences related to fitness and parenting.

2. Defining the problem
In define phase, I focused on synthesizing the research findings to clearly identify the core problems that needed to be addressed. Here's what I did:
1. Competitive Analysis
Opportunities:

1. Parents need a comprehensive platform for well-being that includes fitness, baby care, yoga

2. By offering customized fitness and yoga routines, fostering a supportive community, and partnering with experts, the app can enhance user satisfaction and engagement.

3. Prioritizing dad's health and including features like guided meditation and customizable routines improve functionality and overall user experience.

Threats:
1. The market is crowded with fitness, parenting, yoga, and meditation apps, making it hard to stand out and keep users.
2. Poor guidance on fitness and exercises could cause health risks and legal issues.
3. Handling personal data raises privacy and security concerns. A subscription model could affect user willingness to invest in the app.
2. Affinity map
Creating an affinity map based on research showed key insights into parents' health and wellness needs during and after pregnancy.
Parents want personalized fitness, baby care, yoga, and meditation guidance that fits their schedules. They prefer an all-in-one platform that makes parenting easier. Unlike other apps, NurtureNest focuses on dads' health and stress too

3. Feature Set
Prioritizing features was crucial in helping me stay focused and make design decisions more efficiently. By determining which features were most important, I could ensure that NurtureNest addressed the key needs of parents first. This approach allowed me to streamline the development process and create a more effective and user-friendly app.

4. Business Goals and User needs
By aligning business goals with user needs, I aim to create a valuable, engaging, and user-centric platform that supports parents throughout their journey into parenthood. This alignment ensures that the app not only meets market demands but also delivers a meaningful and impactful experience for its users.

5. Persona
I created personas to understand the different needs and challenges parents face.
By making these detailed profiles, I could design NurtureNest to solve specific problems and meet the actual needs of users. These personas helped me design the app to be more empathetic and User centric on what parents really need.

6. Storyboarding

In my case study, storyboarding has played a crucial role in shaping the design process. By visually mapping out each step of the user's journey, I was able to understand how they would interact with the app at different stages.
This method helped me identify areas that needed improvement and allowed me to test various scenarios before moving into app designs.

3. Ideation Phase
“If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.”
— Albert Einstein
1. POV's And HMW's
I used POVs (Points of View) and HMWs (How Might We) to focus on specific user problems and brainstorm solutions. By defining clear POVs, I could pinpoint the most important challenges parents face.
HMWs then helped me explore different ways to solve those challenges, leading to more targeted and effective design ideas for NurtureNest.
2. Information Architecture
By structuring the app with a clear and logical information architecture, This app ensures that users can easily find and access the features and resources they need. This enhances the overall user experience, making the app intuitive and user-friendly.
3. User Flows
NurtureNest allows users to create profiles with fitness goals and baby details. The home page displays personalized dashboards with fitness routines, baby care tips, and community news. The Discover Page helps users find expert advice and connect with others. The Baby Profile section tracks baby milestones and feeding schedules.

Design System
"One size does not fit all. As you go through your design systems journey, keep in mind that there is no one design system that fits all."
Low Fidelity Designs

Mid Fidelity Designs
I created these Mid Fidelity designs based on research and brainstorming features to ensure accessibility, as they serve as the foundation of any design.

The design system for NurtureNest is made to be easy and consistent. It uses the same colors, fonts, and icons throughout the app to create a calming and supportive feel. All parts of the app are designed to be simple and accessible.

Branding
The logo symbolizes care, warmth, and family by incorporating elements of a nest and a bird family.
The brand uses a soothing Blue and green color scheme to evoke feelings of calmness, growth, and balance, reassuring users that they can confidently navigate both their wellness journey and baby care.

4. Hi fidelity design and Prototypes

5. User testing and Iterations

1. Task success rate without assistance- 90% success from all 7 participants
2. Time taken to complete the task- average 5 minutes
3. Error Rate- 7 of 7 participants suggested the clickable button instead of swappable button.
6/7 participants suggested multiple date selection for choosing dates for the session and 3 of 7 users suggested swappable categories for questionnaire to make it easier to access.
4. User Satisfaction rate: 90%. Overall all the participants were happy with the overall application.

User testing was a pivotal phase in the process, providing valuable insights into user interaction and navigation

1.Home Page
Problem: 5 out of 7 users expressed the need for baby profile on the main page to make it more visible and accessible. otherwise it would look like a general fitness app. some users tried to find it in the Nav bar.
Solution- To address this, I modified main page and added a Baby profile so to make it easily accessible.
2. Discover
Problem: 80% of users accidentally clicked on the wrong section, selecting "Activity Type" instead of "Unique Programs" to find the Yoga Together session. Some users thought it should be under "Activities" and others found the headings unclear.
Solution: To fix this, I updated the heading titles, making it easier for users to navigate to the correct sections and find the Yoga Together session.

3. Baby care section
Problem: UI Related: Problem: 3 of the users suggested that the baby care page looks like out of theme, should be more in theme otherwise it would look like a different app.
Solution: I changed the color of the title bar from yellow to blue to make it more in theme.
4.Sidebar Menu
Problem- 60% users expressed the need for an available and editable profile page option, as they found it difficult to locate the "Edit Profile" option.
Solution- To address this, I modified the sidebar to make the "Edit Profile" option more visible and easier to find.

Something more
I love to create. So I wanted to make a light mode for the design as well. These are just two pages that I made but I think they turned out good. Subtle and confident at the same time.
There is much more to do in this project that I would like to work on sometime soon!

Ideas to explore and build on:

-
Create a thorough design of a baby care page.
-
Add blogs and community support page in the app
-
Add nutrition and food blogs.
-
Add Nutrition and health page.

Reflection

Having faced the challenges of balancing personal health, fitness, and baby care firsthand, I am passionate about creating solutions that genuinely support parents during this transformative time. NurtureNest aims to empower parents by integrating fitness, baby care, yoga, and meditation into a single, user-friendly platform.
From this case study, I learned that thinking out of the box, along with clear navigation and easy access to key features, is crucial for a good user experience. User feedback is essential for identifying and fixing problems, such as confusing headings or hidden sections.
Making small, targeted design changes can significantly improve usability and help your website stand out from the competition.
Researching for new styles, new plugins inspirations for the designs, was a challenge however it was a fun one!
